Following the passing of club player Chidera Vincent Emeribe, West Demerara giant Pouderoyen FC staged a fundraising doubleheader on Saturday at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue, with the proceeds from the evening’s activities going towards the bereaved family.
The Nigerian native Emeribe, who also briefly donned the colors of powerhouse outfit Slingerz FC, passed away on September 2nd after being ill.
In the opening game, Slingerz FC defeated Genesis Academy 1-0. Sheldon Holder recorded the only conversion in the 90th minute, racing onto a lobbed pass inside the center of the box following an initial passing combination that included Clive Nobrega before slamming his effort into the right corner of the net.
In the second fixture, Pouderoyen lost to Emeribe’s former club, the African Connection by a score of 1-4.
Meanwhile, former Pouderoyen head coach Travis Bess, who engineered Vincent’s move to Pouderoyen following a practice match, said during a post-match comment, “In early 2021, we would have played a practice match against the African Connection team, and the game ended in a draw. I was the coach of Pouderoyen at that juncture and would have taken note of three opposing players, Vincent being one of them. He stood out in terms of how he played as a defensive midfielder; he had technical ability and passing vision for the game, and at that time we were in search of a number six (defensive midfielder) who had that quality. Subsequently, he would have transferred from Pouderoyen to Slingerz in 2022, and after a brief stint, he would have returned in 2023.”
He further said, “As a person, we were always pleasant and down to earth. As a player, he was very respectful, and it was a pleasure to work with him. I wish I had more time to train with him, as we would have been outstanding players had he continued with Pouderoyen longer. “I offer my condolences personally and on behalf of the club to the friends and family of Vincent.”
