Teen killed, four injured after car hits utility pole at Nabaclis

An 18-year-old was killed, while four others were injured when the driver of the car they were in lost control and slammed into a utility pole at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara.

The dead teen has been identified as Ghanesh Mahabal of Belmont, Mahaica. Those injured were the 28-year-old driver of Belmont Mahaica, whose name is unknown; 17-year-old Mahendra Ramnarine of Supply, Mahaica; 18-year-old Mark Thomas of Supply, Mahaica; and 32-year-old Vickey Seeram of Chelsea Park, Mahaica.

According to a release from the police, the incident involving motorcar PAC 3435, occurred around 02:04 hrs yesterday. At time of the incident, according to the release, the driver, whilst negotiating a right turn lost control and collided with a Guyana Power & Light (GPL) pole on the northern parapet, after which the vehicle toppled and ended up in a drain.

As a result of the impact, the driver and the other front seat occupant were flung out of the vehicle while the others remained trapped.

With the assistance of public-spirited citizens, the trapped occupants were freed and an ambulance duly arrived on the scene and took them all to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Mahabal was pronounced dead on arrival. The others were treated.
