The 14th season of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Streetball Championship is set to commence next month, according to Guinness Brand Executive Lee Baptiste, with the county of Essequibo set to make its long-awaited debut in the storied franchise.

Speaking at the official activation launch of the Guinness activities on Wednesday evening at the Grill and Jerk Guinness Bar on South Road, Baptiste disclosed that Essequibo will join the expanding list of sub-meets for the event, which will commence in November with the Georgetown zone.

Baptiste disclosed, “We’ve been trying to start in November; currently, we are looking at potential. We’ve sent correspondence to the Ministry, but we haven’t gotten any feedback since. However, we hope to get some feedback in the weeks to come; then we will soon roll out our plan for November with the Georgetown leg.”

Presently, the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Streetball Championship is played in the zones of West/East Bank Demerara, East Coast Demerara, Berbice, Georgetown, Bartica, and Linden. A national championship is also staged at the conclusion of the sub-meets to culminate the season. The season is set to last for six months.

According to Baptiste, “This will be our first time going to Essequibo; once we had done that, we would have touched all the regions. The decision has been long coming because the Essequibians have been asking us for the event, but because of logistical reasons, it was a bit difficult. Now we have ironed out those issues, so now we could not have them waiting any longer; hence our reason for going to Essequibo.”

This imminent season is anticipated to be the largest to date, as the organisers seek to eclipse previous editions.
