Britton/Edghill loses mixed-doubles encounter at Pan Am Games

Guyana’s Shemar Britton and Chelsea Edghill yesterday lost their lost their round of 32 mixed doubles encounter to   Hector Gatica of Peru and Mabelyn Enriquez of Guatemala at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

The Guyanese pair lost 8-11, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7 and 8-11 to Gatica and Enriquez who were playing under the Independent Athletes Team banner since they are from different countries.

The two table tennis players will be in action today in the singles events.

Edghill is scheduled to play Yadira Silva of Mexico in a round of 32 encounter while Britton will play Daniel Gonzalez of Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile, most of the local track and field athletes will get into the blocks today to begin their quest for medals at the event

Sprinters, Emanuel Archibald (100m, 200m), Aliyah Abrams (400m), Jasmine Abrams (100m), Keliza Smith (100m), national javelin record holder, and Leslain Baird are the nation’s representatives in the discipline at the multi-sport event.

Today’s schedule for the national runners are as follows:

Aaliyah Abrams – Women’s 400m semi-finals from 17:50h • Emanuel Archibald – Men’s 100m semi-finals from 18:35h • Jasmine Abrams, Keliza Smith – Women’s 100m semi-finals from 19:05h

When interviewed, the athletes stated that their immediate goals are to clinch berths in the finals of their respective events. Once in the final eight, they can certainly vie for spots on the podium.
