A Canefield, East Canje Berbice, supermarket was broken into and the robbers carted off over $800,000 in cash along with a large quantity of phone cards.

According to information gathered, the One Go Chinese Supermarket owned by Chinese national, Wang Wei Xiong, 35, of Lot 4 Canefield, East Canje Berbice, was broken into sometime between 00:00hrs and 02:00hrs yesterday.

The supermarket which was opened earlier this month is located at Lot 34 Canefield, East Canje Berbice.

Stabroek News was told, that the owners made the discovery during the wee hours of yesterday and reported that over $800,000 in cash along with an undisclosed quantity of Digicel and GTT phone cards were discovered stolen.

The police have since launched an investigation into the matter.

Xiong currently operates two supermarkets in Canefield both located along the public road.

At his first supermarket located at Lot 1 Canefield, East Canje Berbice, Xiong was burgled five times since opening in 2019.

In July 2020, the perpetrators escaped with a computer in the cashier area, which was estimated to have been valued at $200,000; the CCTV monitor, valued $200,000; a camera valued $11,000; $100,000 in phone cards; $80,000 in cigarettes; and $400,000 in cash, among other items.

In October 2020, Xiong told Stabroek News that two perpetrators broke into the building while there were two guards at the location who immediately contacted them and the police.

The lawmen had quickly arrived at the scene and nabbed one perpetrator while the second escaped with the stolen items which included $100,000 in cash and a quantity of phone cards.
