The PPP/C Government yesterday signed $4.1 billion in contracts for the construction of 100 community roads along the East Bank Demerara corridor.

It came a day after $7.8b worth of contracts for East Coast community roads were signed.

Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, speaking at the signing ceremony yesterday at Friendship on the East Bank, urged contractors not to squander the opportunity and emphasised the Ministry of Public Works’ zero-tolerance for substandard work.

The Minister stressed the importance of efficient project execution and advised contractors to carry out the roadworks without causing a deterioration of existing roads.

On Monday, 222 road contracts valued at approximately $7.8 billion were signed for the East Coast of Demerara, the Department of Public Information (DPI) reported.

The ceremony took place at the Lusignan Community Centre. Indar said at that ceremony that 78 additional contracts would soon be signed, fulfilling the promise of completing 300 roads.

DPI said that these projects will complement the 300 roads in Region Six and 100 on the East Bank of Demerara, forming a comprehensive infrastructural network.

Indar outlined the scope of the project, spanning from the East Coast corridor to Mahaica.

He called on contractors to adhere to specifications, purchase materials from established vendors, and cooperate with residents to ensure quality work within stipulated deadlines.

DPI said that the achievement builds on the Ministry of Public Works’ earlier tripartite agreement with the Ministries of Housing and Water, and Local Government, resulting in the construction of approximately 1,100 roads.

Indar stated that “close to 4000 roads were built” since 2020, highlighting the government’s unprecedented speed in road construction.
