A 73-year-old pedal cyclist has succumbed to injuries he sustained after he was struck down by a minibus on October 26 along the Bengal Farm Access Road leading into the backlands.

Dead is Walter Jaundoo of Epson Village, Corentyne. The driver of the minibus, BHH 2939, a 51-year-old lance corporal of police is in custody for questioning.

According to information gathered, on Thursday, October, 26, just around 1 pm, the minibus was proceeding east behind the pedal cyclist along the road. Police, in an initial report, said that the driver alleged that while overtaking Jaundoo, he sounded the horn but suddenly the cyclist swerved right into his path.

He reported that he felt an impact on the front right portion of his vehicle and on checking found Jaundoo lying on the ground. He was conscious and had injuries to his right foot. At the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was taken, Jaundoo was admitted as a patient suffering from a fractured right foot.

However, just around 2.30 pm on Thursday (November 2), the pedal cyclist succumbed to his injuries.

His widow, Jinette Jaundoo said yesterday that while hospitalized, her husband had told her that he was riding out from the backdam after picking watermelons when he realized a bus was coming full speed behind him.

According to the woman, he told her that before he could get to the corner of the road, he was struck down and had been unconscious for several minutes.

The woman revealed that the bus driver had picked up her husband and taken him home; he was subsequently taken to the hospital. While he had sustained injuries to his foot, she said, he had been complaining about internal pains in his chest and back area. Nevertheless, she said, she had been hoping he would recover, but now has to come to grips with his death.
