Has the granting of amnesty to the city’s errant rate payers ever worked?

Dear Editor

What will it take for City Hall to understand that the Government is not opposed to an amnesty but it must be done in a structured manner guided by laws and regulations?  The exercise must not be perceived as a favour being meted out to errant rate payers at the whims and fancies of City Hall. The threat to the resort to legal action seems petulant and is all too familiar when it is either our way or the court’s way.

This public spat runs contrary to commitments and undertaking given by the mayor of working in unity with both sides of the table for the betterment of the citizens and the city. So what has happened…was the seemingly earnest undertakings just empty rhetoric? Several past, similar amnesty exercises still see City Hall in the red. A review to the granting of amnesty should be undertaken to see if the initiative is indeed working and achieving its intended outcomes. It just seems more of the same coming from a new and supposedly invigorated council.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
