The GT Beer East Coast Demerara (ECD) 5/5 tapeball tournament bowls off today, featuring 19 teams competing for the coveted title. Sponsored by Banks DIH Limited, the competition will determine the champions of East Coast Demerara through an exciting seven-a-side format.

Following a successful tournament in Essequibo, the focus has shifted to the East Coast, with the Enmore Community Centre ground hosting three match days. The action begins today at 09:30h, with the final group matches on November 19 and the knockout games and final under lights on November 26.

A substantial prize pool of over G$400,000 is up for grabs with the champion team securing G$200,000. The runner-up will receive G$100,000, while the third and fourth-placed teams will receive G$40,000 and G$20,000, respectively. Trophies accompany all cash prizes, and there are additional individual awards in cash and trophies.

GT Beer Brand Manager, Dwain Bristol, emphasized the bonus of the champion team representing East Coast Demerara in a national playoff against winning teams from other districts. Bristol encouraged a competitive yet spirited atmosphere, urging teams to come out, have fun, and make the tournament memorable.

He revealed that after the Essequibo and East Coast legs, the competition will resume in other areas in January 2024. Banks DIH Limited’s Key Accounts Manager and coordinator, Shameer Shahib, outlined the ambitious goal of covering eight catchment areas nationwide, with winning teams meeting in the national playoff. Shahib stressed adherence to competition rules and playing within the spirit of the game while having fun.

Highlighting Banks DIH Limited’s commitment to community development, Shahib expressed the company’s investment in grassroots activities like Tapeball cricket. The sport has not only seen increased player participation but also a growing viewership at the venues.
