I listened to the first part of an interview with Captain Gerry Gouveia, National Security Advisor to the President and Government. Gouveia’s interview was a set of inaccuracies and bias. I shall deal only with two matters of which I am aware.
First, he ascribes the motto and the ideological position of commanding heights of the economy to the Government which preceded the 1992 change of Government. He went out of his way to say that the late President Desmond Hoyte started to change this policy of commanding heights of the economy, as he glorified the position, potential and power of the Private Sector.
The statement about controlling the commanding heights of the economy started with the PPP years ago under the leadership of Dr. Cheddi Jagan and there was good reasons for this ideological position. It is no secret that in Guyana you’ve had good and terrible members of the private sector. Those who underpaid their workers, bought inferior goods and sold with high markups and do not support ordinary people in their sporting and cultural activities.
Secondly, the gentleman boasted of the extended National Service but unless he did so before the end of the interview, which was cut off, he failed to tell his interviewer of the benefits of National Service to this nation. I hope that in the future, Mr. Gerry Gouveia will consult those knowledgeable persons before he launches out on his next expedition.
