The 61st edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships will kick off tomorrow with the cycling road race, the 10km road race and the grand opening ceremony.

Amid rhythmic and entertaining singing and dancing performances, the opening ceremony of the annual showpiece at the National Track and Field Centre at Edinburgh is set to be ushered in by several dignitaries from 15:00hrs.

As customary, the 10km road race will commence simultaneously in the village of Mary six miles away. Prior to the ceremony, the 40km and 25km cycling road races will pedal off on the outer circuit of the National Park from 10:00hrs.

The annual six-day meeting which has fostered several of Guyana’s top athletes, is set to be declared open after the feature address.

Last year, Prime Minister, Mark Phillips welcomed back the Games which rose from the ashes of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Off to a fast start, the nation’s best student athletes and teachers are vying for medals and bragging rights in the various disciplines in the second  ‘Nationals’ since 2019.

In excess of 1500 athletes and teachers from the 15 districts will converge on the various host venues for the nation’s largest school sports event.

Following the last year’s edition of the Championship, District 10 earned their sixth consecutive overall title to take their total wins to an impressive 19 overall.
