Semple, Charles, Glenn, Abbensetts capture sprint golds at ‘Nationals’

Akaziah Semple, Skylar Charles, Akeela Abbensetts, and Nalicia Glenn were among the gold medal performers when the 61st National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming, and Track and Field Championships continued on Wednesday evening at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.

Semple of District 5 (West Coast Berbice) won the highly anticipated Boys’ U-8 80m, clocking a time of 11.51 to defeat Jadon Bristol (11.52s) of District 4 (East Coast Demerara) and Kester DeSouza (11.53s) of District 3 (West Demerara).

Meanwhile, Glenn of District 4 (East Coast Demerara) raced to gold in the Girls U-20 100m final, in the process lowering the record to 12.00 seconds. The previous record of 12.03 was set by Keliza Smith of District 3 (West Demerara) in 2022.

District 12’s Sheandra Gad (12.33s) and District 3’s Shaneka Campbell (12.47s) finished in second and third, respectively.

On the other hand, Skylar Charles of District 3 (West Demerara) vanquished all challengers to win the boys’ U-16 100m final. Also, Akeela Abbensetts won the Girls U-10 100m final.

In other results, Telicia Smith of District 10 (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani) clinched gold in the Girls U-14 800m final. Also, Narissa McPherson of District 11 (North Georgetown) stormed to victory in the girls’ U-20 800m final with a time of 2:35.1 seconds.

 Similarly, Kosi Thomas of District 3 (West Demerara) secured gold in the boys’ under-20 800m final.
