Canje lad dies in Borlam turn crash

A crash at the Borlam turn on Sunday evening has left a Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice lad dead and his family in a state of disbelief.

Dead is Marvin Ishmile, 18, of Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice.

According to the Guyana Police Force, just around 7 pm on Sunday at Borlam Public Road, minibus, PPP 391 owned by Deonauth Moses called Chenick, a businessman of Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice and which the police said was being driven by Ishmile with occupant Rai Badree, 60, of Lot 27 Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice ran into a heap of sand at the location.

The police’s report said that the initial investigation revealed that the vehicle was proceeding west on the southern drive lane of the said road allegedly “at a fast rate … when the driver lost control of the said vehicle and collided with a heap of sand on the southern side of the road, which caused the vehicle to topple several times and (end) up on the southern side of the road.”

As a result of the collision, both the driver and the passenger sustained injuries. Stabroek News was told that Ishmile was pitched through the bus’s windscreen and landed on a nearby parapet.

Ishmile and the passenger were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The passenger was treated for injuries and eventually released.
