Twenty-seven-year-old Michael Jacobis of Lot 175 Bartica, Region Seven, appeared before Magistrate Rhondel Weever at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with possession of a firearm without a licence.

It is alleged that on December 12 in front of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) headquarters on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown, he had in his possession two firearms – a .38 Ruger revolver, and one 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

Jacobis pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that while under caution, he admitted to the investigators that he was the owner of the firearms.

However, the attorney for Jacobis opposed the claims made by the prosecutor and told the magistrate that his client never admitted to ownership of anything and asked the court to disregard the video which was in the prosecution’s possession. He emphasised that the video usually goes through a process.

He also told the court that on the day in question when his client was arrested, he was not the only occupant of the vehicle, but was the only one arrested and taken in for questioning.

In the end the magistrate denied bail and remanded Jacobis to prison.

His next scheduled court appearance is on January 26 pending fixture and statements in the matter
