Tain businesswoman injured in shooting incident

The police in Berbice are investigating the circumstances around the shooting of a businesswoman at her Tain supermarket on Thursday afternoon.

Li Cangyu, a Chinese national, 38, who operates a supermarket at Lot 91 Tain Public Road, reportedly sustained a gunshot injury just around 1.30 pm.

The suspect has been identified as a  guard attached to a security service in New Amsterdam.

According to the police, the businesswoman was standing in front of the counter in the supermarket. The suspect who was serving as an armed guard  at the location was sitting on a chair just behind her.

He reportedly raised his firearm and was about to get up when a loud explosion was heard. The businesswoman started to scream and hold on to her left leg where she was shot.

She was rushed to Port Mourant Public Hospital where she was seen by a doctor on duty and was admitted a patient after which she was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Her condition is listed as stable.

The security guard was placed in custody pending investigations.
