Traffic management needed at Movietowne Road and Railway embankment intersection

Dear Editor,

It is heartening to read about the efforts being made by the Police Force to deal with the anticipated traffic congestion on Regent Street for the Holiday Season. An appeal is now being made for the Traffic Chief to provide some control and oversight at the intersection of the ‘Movie-towne Road’ and the Railway embankment for the same period. Normally, the Railway Embankment provides access to the Giftland Mall, CARICOM Headquarters and other businesses in Pattenson/Liliendaal area. Persons utilize the “Movietowne Road’ to get to and from Massy Supermarket and the Mall since there is no other direct connection to a main road.

On any given day, at least two accidents occur at the Railway Embankment intersection during peak traffic hours. With the increase in consumers going to the two malls for the Christmas season, there is a massive backup of traffic, with the accompanying blaring of horns and raging tempers, from midday extending into the evening. While there is usually a traffic rank at the UG road junction, the mayhem near the ‘Movietowne Road’ is underestimated and hence overlooked. From experience, this chaos will only worsen as we get nearer to Christmas. The intervention and presence of the Police Force would be most welcome.

Sincerely,
