Policemen charged with conspiring to rob Chinese national granted bail

The two policemen who were charged with conspiring to rob a Chinese national of $8 million reappeared on Wednesday before Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court where they were granted bail in the sum of $500,000 on each charge.

Julian Smartt and Winston Williams were jointly charged with conspiracy to commit robbery back on December 5 after they appeared before Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus.

It is alleged that that on November 29, while at Prashad Nagar, George-town, they conspired together along with two others to rob Chinese national, Qi Lin, of $8 million in cash while armed with a gun.

Additionally, the two men faced separate charges. It is alleged that Smartt on the day in question at the Prashad Nagar police outpost, while being an agent employed by the state, attempted to obtain $150,000 from Qi Lin for the offence of use of a cellphone while operating a motor vehicle, and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle and an uninsured motor vehicle.

It is also alleged that Williams, while being an agent employed by the state, attempted to obtain from Qi Lin for himself, the sum of $30,000 as a reward for having the aforementioned charges foregone.

Both Smartt and Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The duo who appeared from the lock ups via Zoom on Wednesday, were afforded the opportunity to enter another plea and both opted to enter another not guilty plea.

Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry who represents Julian Smartt informed the court that his client is entering a special not guilty plea.

Police prosecutor Mandel Moore maintained his objections to bail stating that at the time the offence was committed, the accused were agents of the state.

The magistrate granted bail to each defendant at $500,000 on each charge with the conditions that they turn in their passports and report to the Brickdam police station until the end of the matter.
