Spankhurst outpaces Bossalina at Port Mourant Boxing Day Horse Meet

Spankhurst edged out Bossalina in a pulsating run to win the feature Metro Cup one-mile event at the Port Mourant Turf Club on Boxing Day.

The American bred colt owned by the Jumbo Jet Racing Stables, along with Bossalina set a frenetic pace on the quick sand and built a fabulous finish nip-and-tuck finish.

Spankhurst imported about a year ago and trained by Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr., had its head down just at the right moment to land the coveted Metro Cup and the hefty $1.5M winning for its handlers.

With champion jockey Colin Ross in the stirrups, Spankhurst led Bossalina, recently imported Canadian steed, Stolen Money and American Traveler across the line at the overflowing venue in the six-horse field.

In the co-feature OBL Derby for Three-Year Old Guyana and West Indian event, Red Ruby drew off in the final furlong to earn a close victory in the eight-furlong race.

The Fazal Habibulla trained thoroughbred earned its handlers $1M for the win. In a close finish with Angry Bird. Top Gun and Renaissance Man finished third and fourth in that order.

The ‘Sport of Kings’ is set to continue with a bang on New Year Day when the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee presents its Sprint Classic at the Rising Sun Turf Club. Gates open at 10:00am and early bird tickets cost $2000.
