If you are a fan of horse racing, then the place to be today is the Rising Sun Turf Club to witness the staging of the SINOTRUK Sprint Classic.

The fixture is set to usher in the New Year as the biggest social event on the local sporting calendar.

Presented by the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee (JJTRC), the country’s leading horse racing promoter will get proceedings underway with an ultra-competitive eight-race card highlighted by premier thoroughbreds Spankhurst and Bossalina.

Today’s feature event is billed as a battle of the ‘sexes’ rematch between Boxing Day’s winner Spankhurst (gelding) and runner-up Bossalina (mare), and Derby winners Red Ruby and Firecracker.

Spankhurst does not have an easy job behind the curtain, as horses bred in Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, and Brazil are also seeking to dethrone the champion steed. Time will tell whether the USA-bred Spankhurst will defend its unbeaten tag.

Further, the Guyana-bred two-year-olds will be competing on the card that is written to recognise and promote the Guyana-bred horses, which continue to keep the sport alive.

Today’s card, which gets off to a flying start at noon, is a preview of bigger things to come during the 2024 season, according to JJTRC’s head of racing, Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr.
