Twenty-seven year-old miner, Michael York, appeared yesterday before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the George-town Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with break and enter and larceny.

It is alleged that between December 27 and 28, 2023, York, while in the company of another, broke and entered the business place of Estwick North and stole one 32-inch Emerald Pro television worth $39,000, one 42-inch Kodak television valued $30,000, one HP monitor valued $15,000, a pair of JBL speakers valued $800,000, and a quantity of alcohol valued $67,000 for a total value $941,600.

York pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The police prosecutor informed the magistrate that York is no stranger to the law as he was previously convicted on an armed robbery charge, only being released in June 2023. The court also heard that his accomplice is currently on the run and that some of the stolen items were recovered from the accomplice’s home after his sister surrendered them to the police.

Further, during the investigation, it was revealed via cellphone messages and photos found of the stolen items on York’s phone, that he and his accomplice were conspiring and negotiating to sell the items. In addition, while under caution, York admitted to investigators that he was involved in the matter but only to organise the sale of the stolen items.

In rebuttal, York’s defence attorney told the court that her client was at home when the police arrested him. She also alleged that he was assaulted by police officers while in custody and asked for bail to be granted in reasonable sum and to consider that he was injured during the alleged assault and that the police refused to render him medical assistance.

After consideration of the arguments, the magistrate refused bail and adjourned the matter to January 24.
