Four teenagers in custody over JC supermarket robbery

Four teenagers from Sand Road, Good Hope, Region Two, are currently in police custody in connection with the recent robbery at a Johanna Cecilia Supermarket.

The teens, ages 17, 18, and 19, all hail from the same village. They were held as suspects for the robbery committed at Good Life Supermarket.

During the robbery which occurred at about 21.40 hours on December 31, 2023, Anwar Sukhanand, 35, was shot in his left leg. He had gone to the Good Life Supermarket with his wife to purchase groceries. He is currently a patient at the Suddie Public Hospital awaiting surgery to remove the bullet from his leg.

Recounting the incident, Sukhanand said that at first he heard a loud explosive going off but thought it was firecrackers.

“I really thought it was firecrackers, however I heard a second one went off then I felt the pain in my left leg and saw blood. I heard my wife screaming.”

His wife, Ayesha, said she panicked when she saw the gun. She recalled that while one of the men was outside the others were inside terrorizing other customers. Upon realising that her husband had been shot, she immediately stopped a car and rushed him to the Suddie Public Hospital.

According to the police report, the supermarket is operated by a Chinese national, Guang, who resides in the upper flat of the building housing the supermarket. The armed men carted off an undisclosed sum of cash and a quantity of phone cards.

According to Guang, he and his staff were serving customers when four masked men clad in dark-coloured clothing and armed with handguns ran into the supermarket and demanded they hand over all the money.

The men then went behind the two cash registers and took out a quantity of cash and phone cards and during the process a customer was shot.

The four teenagers remain in custody pending investigations.
