DPP orders inquest into Wismar killing

Regional Commander, Superintendent Guy Nurse,  told Stabroek News yesterday that an inquest was ordered by the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions into death of John Jones, who was allegedly killed by his two brothers-in-law after he wounded them with two cutlasses.

Last Tuesday, Nurse told Stabroek News in an interview that the brothers had been transferred from the Linden Hospital Complex to the Georgetown Public Hospital for enhanced medical treatment.

On December 30th, 56-year-old John Jones of Block 22 Squatting Area, Wismar, Linden, was allegedly chopped to death at about 4 pm at his home, reportedly by two of his wife’s brothers after he had wounded them with cutlasses. The two injured brothers are a 43-year-old labourer and a 53-year-old driver, both of Prosville, Wismar. Enquiries have revealed that Jones and the brothers had no issues with each other prior to the incident.

On the day in question, the victim and his wife, Tracy, had a misunderstanding which resulted in an argument. It was disclosed in a police investigation that Tracy called her brothers to take her and her three children away from the home and when the brothers arrived and entered the yard, Jones was waiting with two cutlasses in hand and immediately attacked both. He dealt one a chop to the back of the head, and the other a chop to the right side of the face. A scuffle ensued and one of the brothers relieved Jones of one of the cutlasses and dealt him several chops about his body. Upon seeing the fracas, Tracy grabbed her three children and ran away.

One of the injured brothers went to the Wismar Police Station and reported the matter and was subsequently escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex for medical attention. The other brother used a taxi and proceeded to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was admitted in serious condition. Jones was found lying in his backyard with several chop wounds about his body. The body was escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex.
