A resumption of the rivalry between seven-year-olds Jadon Bristol (4th from right) and Kester De Sousa (5th from right), which was birthed during the 2023 National Schools Championship, is likely to resume at the ‘Academy Meet’ tomorrow.

An ‘Academy Meet’ is set to run off tomorrow and is the product of a collaboration between the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) from 10:00am at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, Georgetown.

Teams from Linden, New Amsterdam, West Berbice, East Bank, and East Coast Demerara, along with Georgetown, will head into action and pit athletes between the ages of six and twelve together. According to the AAG, the meeting’s objective is to “steer them in the right direction.”

President (Ag) of the AAG, Amanda Hermonstine, told Stabroek News that the meet is part of the National Sports Academy’s yearly programme, as athletics is one of the 12 core sports identified to benefit from the ram. However, last year’s ‘Academy Meet’ was brought over to this year, which means that for 2024, there will be two meets, one slated for closer to year-end.

Additionally, the AAG’s final Carifta Games Trial meets are set for next weekend (February 17 and 18) at the National Track and Field Facility in Edinburg, West Coast Demerara.

With the AAG aiming to send 25 athletes to the March 30-April 1 event in Grenada, athletes that have already made the qualifying benchmarks for the games are Tianna Springer (400m & 200m), Athaleya Hinckson (100m), Duel Europe (Long Jump), Attoya Harvey (1500m & 800m), Kaidon Persaud (400m & 800m), Javon Roberts (800m), Ezekiel Newton (100m & 200m), Charissa December (High Jump), Ryan Joseph (High Jump), and Jaheel Cornette (200m).
