That teachers need and deserve liveable incomes is non-negotiable

Dear Editor

Teachers, like all categories of citizens, need and deserve liveable incomes. That is non-negotiable. However, the article on teachers resorting to side hustles to supplement their incomes (KN Feb 10), creates the impression that seeking to supplement their incomes is an unworthy venture and must be condemned.

It is apt to note these same persons would work at two or more jobs overseas to make ends meet without complaining. It is apt to note the many skills and talents of teachers who were interviewed – nail technicians; cake makers; photographer among others as entrepreneurial skills are developed and tapped into, ensuring no one would be dead in their boots. There can be nothing wrong with putting a talent or skill to earn for you.

Who knows these same persons on the picket line might find it better to quit teaching and turn to their side hustles thereby becoming their own boss and owner of their own business. Necessity is the mother of invention. Opportunities abound in every perceived challenge.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
