Let us give our teachers what they deserve

Dear Editor,

Teachers are like parents at school. A labourer is worthy of his hire. Teachers are the reason children are successful from Nursery to Tertiary. When the seniors in High School successfully write 20 or more subjects of the Caribbean Examinations Council  (CXC), the Minister of Education rejoices. Consider, who are the driving forces behind these successes? The teachers with the help of the parents.

Teachers have families like everyone else so they too are deserving of the best salaries possible. Let us respect and be proud of our teachers for their good work they put in at school and give them what they deserve and not a pittance.

The children of the President and Members of Parliament attend private schools. And, I am sure they have relatives who attend public school as well as teach in the public school system.

The Government boasts of the monies given to schools for school supplies. That is their responsibility. It has nothing to do with the teachers’ salaries. The $40,000 per child also has nothing to do with salaries.

The teachers are only being promised that this will happen and that will happen but promises are a comfort to a fool. The Good Book says, “That a Prophet is not honoured in his own country” hence I can say the same for teachers.

Remember, that teachers are brilliant, skillful and intelligent. Be good to the people on your way up, as you will need them on your way down.

I hope good sense will prevail and this matter with the teachers is resolved soonest so that our children can return to the classroom where they belong.

Respectfully,

Theresa Collins
