Bikers behave recklessly under the nose of police HQ

Dear Editor,

The tragic accident on the East Bank Public Road which claimed the life of a biker should bring into focus a dangerous practice of speeding groups of bikers which is becoming more and more frequent along the streets of Georgetown and its environs.

Every weekend, and more particularly on Sundays, a large group of bikers can be seen speeding without helmets up and down Carifesta Avenue with little or no regard to other road users. Many can be seen “wheelying” or lying flat atop their bikes while speeding. Any error on their part will almost certainly lead to very serious accidents.

Along the same Carifesta Avenue there are many sports grounds and the National Park. Families and sports enthusiasts converge in this area for relaxation and exercise. In the midst of this innocent gathering of people come large groups of speeding motorcyclists with scant regard for anyone else in the vicinity. Anyone on the road is forced to take self-preservation action to avoid the bikers.

All of this speeding and illegal activities are done under the nose of the headquarters of the Guyana Police Force which is situated in the general vicinity of Carifesta Avenue. Don’t any of the senior officers see this biker group?  Will they wait until an innocent life or lives are lost before they act against this illegal activity?.

Here’s hoping that the unfortunate loss of life of this biker brings about change and regularizes those biker groups presently roaming freely on our streets.

Yours faithfully,

M. Abraham
