The defending champions of the John Lewis Memorial 7s Rugby tournament, the Guyana Police Force (GPF), launched their title defence in fine style, winning four of their five round robin games yesterday at the Rugby Field in the National Park.

The champions dismantled the Hornets 24-12, saw off a staunch challenge from GDF in a 14-10 win, and handed the Panthers and Hornets (2nd match) 26-10 and 20-0 losses. However, in their second fixture against GDF, the police came up short as the army men prevailed 19-15 to register their only win of the day.

While the police have started strongly, the Panthers have shown their claws with three wins from four matches, their only blemish being the loss against the police side.

The Panthers inflicted the heaviest defeat of the day in the opening game of the tournament, a 41-5 thrashing of the GDF outfit. Their other two wins came against the Hornets (21-7) and a return fixture against the GDF, a 12-5 affair.

The Hornets, meanwhile, had a single win, a 10-5 encounter over GDF. The tournament continues today at the same venue at 3:00 p.m. with the remaining round-robin fixtures, while the top two ranked teams will clash in the final at 5:30 p.m., with third place decided at 5:00 p.m.
