Police are currently investigating a fatal accident involving a 20-year-old West Coast Demerara pedestrian.

Dead is Worrin Thomas of Area ‘G’ De Willem Public Road. The police report stated that the accident occurred around 10.10 pm on Friday and involved motor car, PZZ 4005, owned by Sheriff Security Services and driven at the time by 29-year-old Okassie Stewart.

Investigations revealed that Thomas was lying on the southern parapet of Zeeburg public road when the car, which was proceeding east along the road, drove over to the southern drive lane and stopped in front of a Chinese supermarket.

In the process, Stewart allegedly drove over the pedestrian, who was still lying on the parapet. He then stopped, exited his vehicle and spoke to another driver whose vehicle was stationary in front of the supermarket. Stewart then got back into his car and drove off.

Thomas was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention around 2.10 am yesterday.

CCTV footage was reviewed, and efforts were made to contact the driver and vehicle involved in the incident. The driver of the car was subsequently arrested after he returned to the accident scene at around 8 yesterday morning. He is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.
