East Bank Berbice man remanded over attempted murder of common-law wife

An East Bank Berbice man was last week remanded to prison after he was charged with the attempted murder of his overseas-based, common-law partner who he reportedly chopped multiple times about her body at Highbury Village, East Bank Berbice.

Muneshwar Hemraj also known as ‘Neil’, 44, a carpenter of Lot 3 Highbury Village, East Bank Berbice, was charged with the attempted murder of Deomattie Rampersaud. The incident occurred on March 27, at Lot 3 Highbury Village, East Bank Berbice.

Hemraj appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Michelle Mathias, where the charge was read to him and he was not required to plead. He was remanded to prison and will return to court on March 29 for report.

According to information gathered, Rampersaud, 56, an overseas-based Guyanese and of Lot 3 Highbury Village, East Bank Berbice, shared a common-law relationship with the accused.

Around 9.30 on the night in question, they were in the upper flat of her two-storey wooden and concrete house when they had an argument over her being on her cellular phone. Hemraj reportedly grabbed a cutlass and dealt Rampersaud several chops about her body. He then placed her in her car and took her to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she has since been admitted.

As of yesterday afternoon, her condition remained serious but stable.
