Defending champion of the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Women’s U-19 T20 competition, Demerara, was crushed by nine wickets as Berbice won emphatically to lift this year’s trophy.

Berbice skipper Realanna Grimmond turned in a match-winning bowling performance before she did her bit with the bat to lead her side to victory.

After winning the toss, Grimmond inserted Demerara to bat and accounted for four wickets as the Berbicians skittled their foe for a meagre 63 in 15 overs.

So woeful was the Demerara side’s batting effort that 23 runs of their eventual total were accounted for by extras, which meant just 40 were scored from the bat. Their captain, Naomi Barkoye, was the only player to get to double figures with 12, as the rest of her teammates surrendered without a murmur.

While Grimmond snapped up the last four Demerara wickets to finish with 4-17 (4 overs), support was provided by Trisha Hardat (2-8, 4 overs), while Crystal Durant and Kaina Leitch took a wicket each. The other dismissals were run-outs.

Needing just 64 to win, the Berbicians only lost opener Durant (24) en route to an emphatic win. Durant’s fellow opener, Tieaa Isaacs, was left not out on 14 (40 balls), while skipper Grimmond stroked a couple of fours in her unbeaten 10 (5 balls) to seal the victory.

Following this tournament, the GCB will now select a national squad that will represent Guyana in the upcoming regional competition.
