The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has disclosed that as part of its efforts to modernise the institution it will be changing its approach to promotions.

As such it is currently offering core courses as an alternative to traditional promotional exams, aiming to enhance the skills and knowledge base of its members, a GPF release stated on Tuesday.

It explained that among the newly introduced courses is the Final Training for Constables, aimed to provide comprehensive training and equip constables with enhanced capabilities for more effective policing. Successful completion of this course renders constables eligible for promotion to the rank of Lance Corporal.

Additionally, the GPF has introduced Junior Officers Course 1 and 2, tailored for Lance Corporals and full Corporals respectively. These courses are aimed at further developing the leadership and managerial skills of junior officers within the ranks. Upon the successful completion of these courses, ranks will be entitled for promotion to full Corporal and Sergeant.

In a recent interview with Radio Eve Leary, Superintendent Sonia Herbert unveiled a significant shift in the Guyana Police Force’s approach to promotions. She emphasised the importance of continuous learning and professional development within the Police Force, while highlighting the organisation’s commitment to ensuring all members are certified, indicating a significant step towards raising the standards of policing in Guyana.

According to the release, the Guyana Police Force Academy achieved full accreditation in August last year, marking a milestone in its pursuit of excellence. Currently, the academy is in the final stages of acquiring international accreditation, a move that will further validate the quality of training offered.

Looking ahead, Herbert revealed “ambitious” plans to launch diploma and degree programmes through the academy. This initiative underscores the Force’s commitment to providing opportunities for higher education and career advancement within the organization.

She further urged policemen and women to seize every opportunity for personal and professional growth, emphasising that the “sky is the limit” for those who aspire to excel in their careers. With these transformative changes, the Guyana Police Force is poised to enhance its effectiveness and professionalism in transforming from a Guyana Police Force to a Guyana Police Service, the release added.
