Guyana off to shaky start in men and women singles

2024 Caribbean Table Tennis Championship

Guyana commenced the individual segment of the 2024 ITTF Caribbean Championship on a poor note, as they recorded five defeats, with only Shemar Britton registering a victory yesterday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Britton defeated Aruba’s Shaofeng Xie 11-7, 11-2, 11-5 to commence his individual campaign. However, five of his teammates lost in their respective opening matches. In the men’s section, Joel Alleyne lost to Oscar Birriel of Puerto Rico 4-11, 8-11, 3-11, while Elishaba Johnson went down to the Dominican Republic’s Abit Tejada 4-11, 6-11, 3-11.

In the women’s segment, Chelsea Edghill lost to Eva Britto of the Dominican Republic 9-11, 9-11, 10-12, while Jasmine Billingy went down Cuban Estela Crespo 3-11, 4-11, 5-11, and Thuria Thomas was defeated by Yasiris Ortiz of the Dominican Republic 3-11, 5-11, and 4-11.

Meanwhile, Guyana lost 0-3 to Cuba in the semi-final round of the men’s division earlier in the day. Britton went down to Adrian Perez 2-11, 11-7, 10-12, and 4-11 in the first fixture. In the second match, Elishaba Johnson lost to Livan Martinez 11-8, 7-11, 8-11, and 2-11. Joel Alleyne’s defeat to René Mendez via a 7-11, 6-11, and 3-11 score sealed Guyana’s exit.
