Letters to the Editor

Government members misrepresented decisions taken at the Special Select Committee meeting on local government

Dear Editor, An erroneous and lamentable article was published in the Guyana Chronicle of February 1, 2013 under the caption ‘Kumar charges Opposition with frustrating local government elections,’ in which PPP/C MP, Neil Kumar accuses the opposition of “frustrating the efforts of the government to discuss the local government Bills and, subsequently hold local government elections” (sic).

Amerindian rights are circumscribed and subject to the rights of others

Dear Editor, Following Justice Insanally’s recent decision that a mines officer of GGMC had not shown cause why an order nisi to quash a cease work order should not be made absolute and that the Isseneru Village Council had not shown cause why the order nisi prohibiting them from exercising any form of control over the mining operations of a miner should not be made absolute, the Amerindians, the GHRA and others have sought to use the media to defame the Honourable Judge and bring the administration of justice into disrepute, thereby themselves committing unjustifiable conduct and indefensible contempt of court, which the Attorney General should pursue in defence of the judiciary.

Everyone should wear a lifejacket when travelling on the rivers

Dear Editor, On behalf of the residents of Bartica and its environs, the parents, wives, children and other relatives would like to thank the maritime department (MARAD), the police, miners, owners of boats and persons who braved the rapids and the Mazaruni River around Crab Falls to recover the bodies of those who worked in the mining sector.

Senseless attack on Oscar Clarke and his family

Dear Editor, My heart bleeds for my country. The shooting of Mr Oscar Clarke and senseless attacks on his family at their residence serve as another reminder of the level to which this country has sunk and the quality of political leadership coming from the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Clement Rohee.
