There is a gap of between 15,000 and 19,000 who are paid the Old Age Pension but are not entitled under the law

Dear Editor, Minister of Human Services Ms Priya Manickchand behaved with apoplectic rage in response to a conclusion in a report by her parliamentary colleague Mrs Sheila Holder that the number of persons to whom the Old Age Pension (OAP) is paid is inflated by 17,640 (phantom persons, according to Mrs Holder) with a loss to the state of over $1.3 billion.

When is evidence needed?

Dear Editor, I recall the President saying a few years ago, in response to questions about corruption, that accusers should bring him the evidence so that he could deal with it.

Dear Editor, Whilst driving on Thursday, January 20, I was stopped by a traffic constable who informed me that he was instructed by the Sergeant in charge of the Traffic Division to tell me to drive into the Anna Regina Police station compound, which I did.

Police arrested teacher in headmaster’s office

Dear Editor, Cognisant of statements attributed to the President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) Mr Colin Bynoe, concerning the arrest of teacher Ronald Forde at the Fort Wellington Secondary School, West Coast Berbice, on Monday January 24, 2011, which have been published in the media, the Guyana Police Force is refuting claims that excessive force was used, that heavily armed ranks blocked the entrance to the school, that the teacher was arrested in his classroom, and that students were taken away for interviewing without the Headmaster’s consent, and wishes to clarify the matter.
