Setting a standard for mediocrity

Dear Editor, There is an embarrassing representation of non-knowledge of the subject contained in the vapid advertisement on page XXXI1 of The Chronicle Pepperpot of April 16, 2017.

UG cannot at this time be all things to all people

Dear Editor, Both the 3rd to last and the 2nd to last paragraphs of SN’s editorial of April 7, 2017, recaptured similar conclusions arrived at some thirty odd years ago in a major comprehensive study: “The Organizational Effective-ness of the University of Guyana: A Case Study of an Emerging University in a National Development Context” (Perry,C.O.,1985.).

Enormous strides were made in relation to Amerindian land rights, Granger COI could pose threat

Dear Editor, 1) The recent establishment of a Commission of Inquiry by President David Granger to “examine and make recommendations on resolving issues and uncertainties surrounding the individual, joint or communal ownership of lands along with Amerindian Land Titling issues “ has resulted in a vehement and bitter outcry among our Indigenous people including their elected Village Councils, Indigenous Groups, the National Toshaos Council, supporters and members of the People’s Progressive Party; and sections of the public who view the establishment of this Commission as both a transgression of the land rights  and  “an  expression of gross disrespect for the Amerindian people of Guyana” whose fast growing population numbering over 70 000 living in over 200 Villages/Communities accounts for almost 10% of Guyana’s population.

A democratic government would have extended the SARA debate beyond 10pm

Dear Editor, Notwithstanding the deep reservations, the multiplicity of concerns and complaints and the widespread fear and anxiety expressed about the SARA Bill from Guyanese across this land and important stakeholder organizations, last Thursday, the government tossed all of them aside and rammed this Bill through the National Assembly.
