Letters to the Editor

Harold Drayton deserves one of Guyana’s highest awards

Dear Editor, The recent issue of the newsletter of the University of Guyana (UG), now titled ‘Renaissance’, has an article captioned ‘A Brief History of the University of Guyana’ by eminent historian and professor emeritus, Sister Mary Noel Menezes, in which she refers to a “Memorandum on Higher Education” that was presented to the Legislative Council in 1963 by then Minister of Education, Mr Cedric Nunes.

Why the emphasis on only one group of ‘veterans’?

Dear Editor, It must certainly be instructive to observers that at a juncture when our society is primed to launch into a progressive mode, there appears to be a substantive reliance on past experience, regardless of quality or relevance, whether deriving from overseas or resurrected from the local doldrums.

The city council should rein in King

Dear Editor, The treatment meted out to the vendors by Town Clerk Royston King, who unashamedly seeks to justify his conduct, must be condemned by all right-thinking Guyanese.

Why are the ministries and MARAD not addressing the sunken dragger problem?

Dear Editor, As hardships for miners and residents of the Middle and Upper Mazaruni mount, due to the sunken river dragger which has blocked the river channel and is preventing the only form of public transport to those areas – jet boats – from operating, a very strong finger of reprimand must be pointed at the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure for their lax handling of the situation.

Amerindian leaders should hold a conference on the state of their communities

Dear Editor, As we observe the annual Amerindian Heritage Month, the leaders of the indigenous people should use it to take stock of the well-being of the Amerindian people by reflecting on their ‘state of being’, similar to how African Guyanese gathered last month for a week-long conference focusing on the state of African communities.

Town Clerk will not meet vendors’ union

Dear Editor, The Guyana Market Vendors Union wishes to bring to public attention that it is a legally registered trade union established with the objective of working with vendors at their various places of trade in Georgetown and elsewhere with a view to improving their circumstances, including the conditions under which they work.
