It would be a travesty, no less, if the recent revelation of an 80.5 per cent failure rate among the current batch of students at the Guyana School of Nursing were not now to result in an independent enquiry into conditions at the institution.

Dear Editor, The Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc (BCGI) has taken the Minister of Labour to court for exercising his power under the Labour Law, Chapter 98:01 and imposing arbitration between the company and the Guyana Bauxite & General Workers Union (GB&GWU), the workers’ representative.

Dear Editor, A lot has been penned about incidences of mismanagement at GuySuCo and I feel inclined to share my bit being a worker of the company, thus someone who would lose a great deal should the company collapse.

Dear Editor, While several Caribbean luminaries are advocating that the anglophone Caribbean cut all links with their former colonial masters, politicians and the people in French (and even Dutch) colonies adopt the opposite attitude and in fact want to cement links with their colonial rulers.

The ruling of the Chief Justice quashing the advice of the DPP that a rape charge be brought against the Commissioner of Police Mr Henry Greene will not summarily end the damage to the criminal justice system wrought by these proceedings and the feeling among the disempowered – particularly women in this case – that justice for them is unavailable or not easily attainable.

Dear Editor, The arrest of four men who are accused of being involved in several robberies committed on our fishermen at sea recently in the vicinity of the mouth of the Pomeroon River, and the recovery of some outboard engines by the police, is good news.

The EAB has spoken.  Not, one fears, that this might have much impact on our two main political parties, both of whom are long on mistrust and short on reason.
