GPL laying submarine cable in Demerara River

The Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) is advising mariners that it has mobilised the barge Ansar  to lay a submarine cable across the Demerara River and as such they should exercise caution when navigating this area.

In a press release, the company said the cable will be linking the Kingston Power Plant to the Vreed-en-Hoop Installation between co-ordinates  latitude 06 degrees 49’ 24”N and longitude 085 degrees 09’ 58” and latitude 06 48’ 46”N and longitude 085 10’ 42”W. the duration of the project is five weeks.

The barge with attending tug CBJ will be operating on a 24-hour schedule and will be restricted in its ability to manoeuvre.

During daylight hours it will display a signal- blackball, diamond, black ball while at nights it will display vertical lights red, white, red.

GPL is asking all mariners to stay clear of this vessel and to navigate with caution in its vicinity. “Communication can be made on VHF CH.16 via the Georgetown Lighthouse,” the release said.
