They should throw the book at this driver

Dear Editor,

It angered me to read about the death of the motorcyclist on the Harbour Bridge, and the injury to his pregnant girlfriend. Hopefully, both she and child survive.

It is shocking that such needless recklessness has to exist. But something needs to be done to send a warning, and hopefully put a stop to this nonsense. An example should be made of this driver.

He should not be charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He should be charged with murder. He should be found guilty and hanged. It is inexcusable to have committed such an act, and then try to get away from it afterwards too.

If he cannot be charged with murder (2 if the baby does not survive), he should be charged with the next most serious offence, also for overtaking on the Harbour Bridge, dangerous driving, speeding, reckless endangerment, failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

Whenever his case comes before the Court, bail should be refused, given the nature of what happened, and the fact that he attempted to escape once. After conviction, if he is not to be hanged, the maximum jail term for each offence should be applied, and then made to run consecutively.

The driver behind that had the presence of mind to do what he did should be awarded some commendation. Well done to you sir.

Then in the case of the driver on the West Bank Demerara who killed that school child on the pedestrian crossing, the same kind of charges should apply.

Maybe, just maybe, examples are needed to drive some sense into some drivers.

Yours faithfully,

Nyall Jodhan

Editor’s note:

Unless he deliberately tried to kill the motorcyclist, which is clearly not the case, he can’t be charged with murder as there was no malice aforethought or intention to kill. He could, however, be charged with manslaughter.
