The time has come to boycott the minibuses

Dear Editor,

I would have thought that the newspapers would be screaming with releases such as ” Sparta Global Enterprises to add ten news buses to their fleet”, ” Countrywide protest to be held calling for safer and cheaper means of public transport”. etc. This would at least make us think that in a civilized society we are capable of making adjustments to protecting our human resources.

Waking a bit earlier to get to GT, to attend UG, conduct business , or even for work, will do no harm to us. We have to make adjustments to save lives.

Since the death of my friend Dubois and colleague Clive Hercules (brother of national striker, Collie Hercules), I had taken a conscious decision to stop playing Russian Roulette with my life. They died most cruelly in a mini bus smash up, in a route 43 bus of which Dubois was the driver. Many others perished in that accident.

My alternative, since then, was for bigger buses with a little less speed, driven by older and experienced drivers. I put my headphones on and listened to my music without disturbing anyone. I got the same boom from my Walkman, I didn’t need a mini bus for my boom sound.

So we should adopt the attitude that once you choose to ride the death horse you do it at your own peril! There is alternative and safer transport, we have to be sensible!

I have not even called on the government to do something about this grave problem. I have not called on the police to be more vigilant. I have not called on the relevant authority to stop selling driving licences to people who are not qualified.

I am calling on you the people whose life is at risk to be responsible! I am calling on us to make a responsible judgment on what safe travel is. Let begin, today! Let us begin now! It is simply not worth it anymore!

I send my condolences to every family affected by the recent tragedy at Linden. I grieve for the ever smiling Carl McCalmont and the many others that perished.

Yours faithfully,

Norman Browne
