Of all the ideas put forward for trying to avoid a repeat of the terrible accident on the Linden highway, the one that appeals to me the most is that “the drivers of vehicles that break down on the highway definitely ought to get a message to patrol officers who would then respond and protect the area until assistance is received to remove the vehicle ……..”
About ten years ago, when I lived in Section K, Campbellville, I noticed a truck parked for about three days in the same spot on the grass verge in Sheriff Street. At first I assumed it belonged to one of the residents, but as parts of it began to disappear – first the tail lights – it became clear that this was not the case. One night I was horrified to see how the unlit stationary truck affected traffic travelling in both directions and the number of near-misses with vehicles unsuspectingly speeding along behind the truck. The next day I went to the Brickdam Police Station and made a report. When I returned from shopping, after about two hours, the truck was no longer there. I was relieved – and impressed – that the matter had apparently been seen to immediately.
I think the onus should be on drivers to report the breakdown of their trucks immediately, particularly on busy roads and highways. In fact, they should be made to remain on site until the patrol officers arrive. By the same token, a mandatory speed limit ought to be introduced for all minibuses.
