Namilco football festival kicks off this evening

Two matches will kick off the Namilco knockout football festival organised by the Fruta Conquerors Football Club this evening at the Tucville playfield.

The feature double header will see Pouderoyen of West Demerara squaring off with Flamingo in the first match at 17:30 h to be followed by the feature encounter between Santos and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at 19:30 h.

Two more games will be played next Wednesday with Camptown coming up against Mocha Champs of East Bank Demerara, while Fruta Conquerors will battle with BV Football Club of East Coast Demerara.

Sixteen teams are taking part in the invitational tournament now in its fourth year.

The teams in Group ‘A’ are Alpha United, Georgetown Football Club, Fruta Conquerors, Camptown, Uprising, Silver Shatters of Linden, Mocha Champs and BV Football Club, while the teams to be featured in Group ‘B’ are Rosignol United and Monedderlust of Berbice, Santos, Flamingo Western Tigers, Pele, GDF and Pouderoyen.

The tournament now in its fourth year is sponsored by National Milling Company to the tune of $1.5 million.

All matches will be played at the Tucville Playfield under floodlights.

The winners will take home $400,000, with the runners-up claiming $200,000, third place $100,000 and fourth place $50,000.

There will be other incentive prizes including awards for the most valuable player (MVP), highest goal scorer, best goal keeper and young promising players (2).

Several companies have made donations to the incentive prizes including 2J’s store who will contribute to the most valuable player prize, Junior’s Jewellery for the highest goal scorer, Swansea for the best goalkeeper and Global Technology for the young promising players.

Proceeds of the tournament will go towards the development of the Tucville Playfield.
