Two Georgetown teams sent packing

Hosts Fruta Conquerors will go into action tomorrow as play in the fourth annual Fruta Conquerors Knockout Football Festival sponsored by the National Milling Company (Namilco) continues at the Tucville playfield under lights.

The host team will square off with BV Football Club of East Coast Demerara in a Group ‘A’ fixture the feature match of a double header.

The first match will bring together Camptown against Mocha Champs of East Bank Demerara at 5.30pm.

The tournament opened last Friday and two Georgetown teams have already been sent packing following defeats in contrasting fashion.

West Demerara side Pouderoyen scored a convincing 5-1 win over Georgetown’s Flamingoes while the Guyana Defence Force scored a 4-1 win over Santos in a penalty shootout after the two teams were deadlocked 2-2 after extra time.

The soldiers took the lead in the 26th minute through Shawn Hector, but Santos equalised in the 70th minute from the boot of Quacy Price.

Delon John sent Santos further into the lead during the first half of extra time and when, it looked as if Santos would pull off the victory, Stellon David netted for the GDF one minute before the final whistle forcing a penalty shoot-out.

The soldiers, as expected, were better marksmen hitting their target four times while Santos converted only once.

Clement Brown scored a hat-trick as Pouderoyen made light work of Flamingoes scoring in the 26th, 70th and 77th minutes of play with Ron Austin and Clevand Walcott scoring the other two goals for the winners. Eion Singh netted for Flamingoes.

GDF will now play the winner of the Pele versus Monedderlust (Berbice) encounter, while Pouderoyen will be up against the winner of the Western Tigers/Rosignol United clash.
