The human rights of villagers were abused

Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter by Mr Ivelaw Whittaker, Public Relations and Press Officer of the Guyana Police Force captioned “The actions taken by the police are not linked to any political direction or control” (08.03.16).

Ithaca is located on the West Bank of the Berbice River not on the East Bank. Ithaca was purchased by a small group of Slaves, seven, for the sum of $10,000. The village produced some well-educated civil servants who schooled many in office today and was one of the major agricultural villages. Please do not associate Ithaca with the spate of crime that is mushrooming in Guyana.

The Guyana Police Force arrested young men and women, fingerprinting and photographing them while the villagers were going about their business. People on their way to a village funeral service were arrested.

I ask the Police Department what happened to the young people who were taken away from Ithaca, what was their crime. The army cot in question is owned by a member of the Guyana Defence Force.

I ask Stabroek News to visit the village of Ithaca and do a full investigation on the report that was given to them in the letter by the Public Relations Officer. I close by putting the Guyana Government on notice that I am approaching the United States Congress on human rights abuse in Ithaca and later, based on my results, I will approach the United Nations.

Yours faithfully,
