Accused of theft, did not want settlement, but money paid by relative

Dear Editor,

I was arrested and incarcerated at the Suddie Police Station for the full 72 hours during investigations that I was alleged to have stolen some crushed stone belonging to a wealthy businessman (name provided) while it was on a heap by the Riverstown creek some time ago.

While in custody, I maintained my innocence to the police and made it known that I would prefer to be charged and placed before the court, and said I was in total disagreement with a settlement when it was put to me.

Much to my surprise and without my consent while still in the lock-ups, it was brought to my attention that a family member who had access to my money at home paid one hundred and forty thousand dollars ($140,000.00) to the businessman on the advice of the police to settle the matter.

A party of policemen in a car driven by the businessman came into my yard where I am currently engaged in the construction of a two-storey concrete building.

Two sets of stone are lying there – one in the back of the structure and the other in front but none was removed by the ranks.

Not even a statement was taken from me and I was a victim of a very serious injustice at the hands of the police.

I have since written the Commissioner of Police demanding that the entire amount of my hard earned money be refunded to me because I had absolutely no knowledge of the stone the businessman is claiming was stolen from him. The police acted ultra vires and unprofessionally to entertain a settlement against my will when justice is not for sale, and it must be allowed to take its course.

Yours faithfully,
Ghirdharry Singh
