Assault, escape accused refused bail

A 27-year-old man, who allegedly assaulted the mother of his child and escaped from lawful custody, was refused bail when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Mark M. Rodney, a mason of 85 D’Urban Street, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with intention of causing bodily harm and escaping from lawful custody when Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton read them to him.

It is alleged that Rodney assaulted Kelisha Morgan with the intention of causing her bodily harm. Morgan went to make a report at the police station but according to reports was unsure whether to press charges. As a result, when Morgan left the police station, the accused simply followed.

An application for bail was made by Rodney’s lawyer Adrian Thompson, but was denied on the grounds that the accused was a flight risk and might tamper with the witness owing to the proximity of their residences.

He will reappear in court on July 24.
