Old Fort ‘B’ pulled off two more draws against Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Spartans and Everest ‘B’ to take the top spot in the “B” division table with five points from their three matches as the Nobel House-sponsored Goal Galore Indoor hockey tournament continued Wednesday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Western Dragons of West Demerara and Carib Degenerates are locked in second position with four points each from two matches while the Everest ladies have secured four points of their own but from three matches.
Old Fort with a goal handicap of three had to come from behind to catch the young GCC Spartans who enjoyed a six goal handicap.
Tony Cole netted a double and there was one goal each for Teon Joaquin and Michael Jack as Old Fort seemed destined for victory.
But Ashley DeGroot pulled one back for the Spartans with just two minutes left on the clock to leave the scores tied 7-7.
After beginning dead even at 3-3 with Everest ‘B’ Old Fort surged to a three goal lead at 8-5 in their second match of the evening with hat-trick from the in-form Cole while there was one goal each for Delon Williams and Dwayne Allen. Complacency would set in a bit early however and the young Everest ‘B’ team would claw their way back to secure a draw in the dying minutes.
Quillon Williams netted a double for Everest while one goal each came from Travis McKenzie, Andrew Stuart and Jason Hoyte. Both senior ladies sides suffered tough losses early in the evening as the Everest Hikers fell to the Carib Degenerates by 12 – 8 and GCC Tigers to Western Dragons by 10-5.
Timothy Jonas meted out the lions share of the blows to the Hikers with five-goal tally while Gregory Sills and Triston Gomes adding two each. The other goal scorers were Rawl Davson and Ivor Thompson.
The Hikers goals were scored by Maria Munroe, Vashima Bourne, Avonda James and Cora Towler.
The GCC Tigers managed just a single goal by Shebiki Baptiste in their loss to the Dragons while Deon Branford scored a hatrick for the victors which was supported by doubles from Andel and Adrian Sampson and Deon Carew and a lone strike from Trason Corbin.
The most entertaining match of the evening came however between the Everest ladies and the Western Dragons in the second match for each team of the evening. With the heavily favoured Dragons starting with a four goal handicap in favour of the Hikers both teams seemed intent on earning the full three points up for grabs. Despite the speed and pressure of the fitter Dragons, the Hikers ladies fought bravely and showed good composure throughout the game to hold them to a 4-4 draw. Selwyn Brandt and Adrian Sampson each scored doubles for the Dragons to even the scores as the Hikers began the match with a 4 goal advantage.
With no matches being played last night in the ‘A’ division, Everest and Old Fort lead the table with three points each followed by GCC and Shakatan on 0.
In the ‘B’ division Old Fort ‘B’ leads the table on 5 points from 3 matches followed by the Carib Degenerates and Western Dragons with 4 points from 2 matches, Everest ladies on 4 points from 3 matches, GCC Spartans with 2 points from 2 matches, Everest ‘B’ with 1 point from 2 matches and GCC Tigers failing to secure any points thus far from two matches.
