Barzilla and Corriverton Links record victories in Cheddi Jagan Memorial tournament

-Cougars defeated by Monedderlust
Corriverton Links and Barzilla recorded convincing victories over Strike Force and Scottsburg United respectively when action in the Berbice Football Association organized Cheddi Jagan Memorial football tournament got underway last Sunday.

The biggest upset of the tournament came from Monedderlust who defeated newly-crowned Sweet 16 champions Cougars Football Club 5-4 on penalty kicks in their encounter.

Playing under lights at the Scottsburg Community Centre Ground, a Sherwin Murray double (4th and 38th minutes) along with goals off the boots of Oliver Jaundoo (58th) and Roger Phoenix (62nd) guided their team to a 4-2 drubbing of Strike Force, whose goals were scored by K. Quintin (18th) and Leon Crawford (27th).

In the second match of the evening Barzilla made light work of home team Scottsburg United, coming away with a 3-1 victory, thanks to the efforts of Sylvester Smith (1st) and Mark Amsterdam who scored a double in the 19th and 53rd minutes of play.  Trevor Rogers found the net for Scottsburg United in the 68th minute.

In the Cougars/Monedderlust match-up, Ryan Stewart opened the account for the new champions when he squeezed one past an advancing Alwyn Mc Donald in the 21st minute of the game. That  opened up the killing instinct in both teams, forcing custodians  Mc Donald and Ryan Kellawan to effect saves.

The score at lemon time read one nil in favour of Cougars and many thought that they would have continued  their success story from the recently-concluded Sweet 16 tournament where they defeated Guyana Defence Force 2-0 to take the title for the first time.

But Monedderlust, who were a part of the 2007/08 Kashif and Shangai football tournament, displayed a relentless attitude and it paid off in the 63rd minute when Marlon Jordan did what many teams in the Sweet 16 tournament could not do, and that was get past Kellawan.

Regulation and extra time could not determine a victor so penalty kicks became the next factor and Monedderlust persevered to come out on top and advance to the semi-finals, where they join Corriverton Links.
