Bolan, Burton lead Leewards to victory over Guyana

KINGSTON, Jamaica,  CMC – Nelson Bolan snared four wickets for 30 runs to help Leewards complete a 25-run victory over Guyana in their opening round match of the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 One-day Trophy competition yesterday.

Bolan triggered a batting collapse which sent Guyana crashing for 172 in 44.4 overs, replying to Leewards’ 197 for nine from their allocation of 50 overs.

Shayne Burton had hit the top score of to be the rock upon which Leewards’ had built their total before fast bowler Bolan undermined the Guyanese batting.

A 106-run, sixth-wicket stand between Alex Amsterdam and Seon Hetmyer threatened to rubbish Bolan’s hard work, after he captured three early wickets to help reduce Guyana to 36 for five.

Amsterdam led the way for Guyana with 55 and Hetmyer made 37, but there was little substance and little stability from the rest of the batting.

The Guyanese lost their last five wickets for 27 runs with Hayden Walsh Jr mopping up the tail with three for 31 from six overs.

Earlier, the Leewards’ batting too struggled, after they were sent in to bat on a hard, flat Chedwin Park pitch.

Bolan was the only batsman to pass 20, as several Leewards batsmen got into the teens, and then ran out of steam.

Four Guyanese bowlers ended with two wickets apiece.
The players will have a break today before the second round commences tomorrow.
Guyana face Windwards at the Police ground in Kingston, and the Leewards come up against Barbados at Jamalco in rural Jamaica .
