RHTYSC hands over boxing equipment to Central Gym

Boxing became the latest sport in Berbice to benefit from the assistance of Guyana’s leading Youth and Sports Club, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) when they handed over $300,000 worth of equipment to the Central Boxing Gym. Members of the Pepsi Under-19, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23, Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Metro Female and Bakewell Under-17 cricket teams were present on behalf of the club on Thursday for the presentation. The items donated included boxing gloves, head guards, protective seed guards, ring ropes, ring corner cushions, educational and hygiene kits, a trophy, a ringside electric clock and a training uniform, among others. The club also donated a set of items for a community project involving young mothers as part of a major public relations drive. Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster who spearheaded the donation to the boxing gym, stated at the presentation that the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club was totally committed to the development of all sports in Berbice.

CEO of the boxing gym and former national boxing champion Jeff Roberts expressed his profound gratitude to the club for its assistance and praised Foster for his leadership of the club. Roberts stated that he had wanted to approach the club for assistance but he was contacted first by them.

West Indies Female Player Shemaine Campbell (3rd R) hands over the donation to Central Boxing Gym’s Jeff Roberts in the presence of her fellow Pepsi Under-19 teammates and executives of the gym.

Boxing, the national sports personality for 2009 stated, was the only sport which had won international titles for Guyana and attracted youths mainly from less fortunate families.

The boxing gear had been in storage at the club’s office for some time after the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club closed down its own boxing gym, and the Secretary urged the executives of the Central Boxing Gym to take proper care of the items and to make sure that they were used for their intended purpose.

He challenged the gym to work hard to produce national champions in the near future for Berbice, while at the same time making sure that all the boxers made education the key goal in their lives. President of the gym, Abid Ali, praised the club for its continued programme of assisting others to fulfil their dreams, and expressed thanks to Foster for spending over two hours with the gym executives and sharing ideas on how to become a successful organization.
